Six years after the first TakeOver event, NXT TakeOver XXX celebrates a legacy that has evolved from a developing territory into a global WWE brand. During that time, fans have been rewarded with a large roster of talented fighters and tremendous consistency, making TakeOver event programming a must-try.

With so much anticipation for the upcoming pay-per-view, this is an opportunity to connect with some of the classic games from the last 29 events. Included are commonalities that are important to the structure of NXT and will help it become the success it is today. I will mention that this will not include the UK based acquisitions as they were not counted by WWE either.

I would be curious to know what would be number one on this list in the comments? Which breakup do you think was the strongest? And name the match that you feel is most missing from this list.

NXT TakeOver: Fatal 4-Way (11. September 2014)
Fatal 4-Way Match Pelo NXT Championship:
Adrian Neville x Tyler Breeze x Tyson Kidd x Sami Zayn

An often forgotten match from NXT history. There was strong positive reaction at the time, with the main event being a wonderful display of the NXT model of the time. They had four polar opposites who had already feuded over the past few months, with Neville unfairly underestimated for his strong work in the early days of NXT, Tyson Kidd, the veteran ring general who helped shape the future of WWE , while being villainous, Tyler Breeze was much more cunning and manipulative, trying to steal the win.

At the time, Neville was the longest-reigning NXT champion and was known for being extremely resourceful, doing just enough to retain his championship while building a rivalry with Zayn. This feud involved the lithe and popular crowd favorite Sami Zayn, who had come so close to victory only for Neville to take advantage. An early indication of the potential NXT had and still has today.

NXT Acquisition: R Evolution (December 11, 2014)
NXT Championship Game:
Adrian Neville x Sami Zayn

I admit I was a little biased with this choice as it was this match that made me a NXT fan. It was sheer luck that I bought the WWE Network and found out that there was an exclusive PPV that night that ended up becoming this event. At the time, I had no idea who the two men were, but the immaculate storytelling and commentary from Rich Brennan, Corey Graves, and Alex Riley pulled me in and fully understood just how much was at stake.

With Zayn's career at stake and the Full Sail Crowd behind him, the emotion of the moment overwhelmed all onlookers. Great pace, great action, emotionally conflicting moments where Zayn fought his need to win with his belief in the right win, it was a rollercoaster match throughout. Even the referee's elevation was added to the match, and the final act of the match is one of the most cathartic moments in NXT history. An emotionally rewarding story that deserves respect.

NXT TakeOver: Rival (February 11, 2015)
No. 1 Contender Match Pelo NXT Championship:
Finn Balor x Adrian Neville

With Neville representing NXT's past following his record reign as NXT Champion, his match against Balor became a passing of the torch. Balor had already come to NXT with a tremendous aura and unrivaled potential, his demon use unlike anything seen in NXT before.

With powerful punches being the main feature of this intense match, Neville impressively put the opponent ahead and legitimized the novice. Balor capitalized on the match and became one of the most important champions in NXT history, leading tours and raising the bar for the brand.

NXT TakeOver: Rival (February 11, 2015)
Fatal 4-Way Match Pelo NXT Women's Championship:
Charlotte x Sasha Banks x Becky Lynch x Bayley

When Paige was forced to relinquish the NXT Women's Championship after her promotion to the main roster, Charlotte defeated Natalya to become champion. In the prequel to this Fatal 4-Way Match, Triple-H publicly acknowledged his desire to give women more options on the main roster. Under the eyes of the NXT universe, Triple-H publicly demonstrated his intentions when these four women revealed that the problem in women's wrestling wasn't a lack of talent, it was a lack of opportunity.

In a match that combined high-octane action with dramatic near misses, the contenders helped sell the importance of the championship. With contrasting finishing attempts and desperate tactics, there wasn't a single weak link in this hard-fought battle. Charlotte demonstrated her natural talent, Bayley's connection to the crowd made her tremble from her seats, while Sasha's character work was second to none. Lynch seemed like an afterthought at the time, but his future character's potential started here.

NXT Acquisition: Brooklyn (22 August 2015)
NXT Women's Championship Game:
Sasha Banks x Bayley

(Video) Playing The Best NXT TakeOver Matches Ever On WWE 2K19

One of NXT's key strengths in its early years is its tremendous storytelling and long-term restraint to create likable babyfaces that connect with audiences. Whether it's the original versions of Zayn and Balor or the more recent hit of Johnny Gargano, NXT audiences will be rewarded for their care. for the women's championship. She would go into this match as the underdog against the cocky Banks, who had been champions for 192 days.

While preparing for this match, Banks criticized Bayley's efforts and viciously attacked Bayley's injured hand himself during the match. However, with the will of the NXT crowd at his back, Bayley stepped forward and the two created a sensational match that culminated in a poison hurricane from Bayley's top rope. After her finisher Bayley-To-Belly won the match, Bayley celebrated in an emotional moment alongside Sasha, Charlotte and Becky Lynch in the ring.

NXT TakeOver: Respect (October 7, 2015)
30-Minuten-Iron-Man-Match Pelo NXT Women's Championship:
Bayley x Sasha Banks

The first women's match to lead a WWE PPV. Iron Man's first female fight. Not only the culmination of the Sasha Bayley feud, but also a confirmation of the influence of the Four Horsemen (including Charlotte and Becky Lynch) on women's wrestling. Since that match there have been many firsts, the first women's PPV in Evolution, the first women's Hell In A Cell match, the first Royal Rumble. Since then, NXT has had better women's matches, but which ones were more important?

The fans chanted and cheered "Women's Wrestling" before the match even began, a well-deserved reward for the hard work that NXT and its division have put into raising the standards of women's wrestling. With a perfect blend of Sasha's villainous bully and Bayley's babyface fire, it's an emotionally compelling story that has allowed Bayley to be confirmed as the new figurehead of NXT. Both women received a well-deserved standing ovation.

NXT Acquisition: Dallas (April 1, 2016)
Simple game:
Sami Zayn x Shinsuke Nakamura

Despite the beauty of his well-deserved victory over Neville for the NXT Championship and his continued presence as the beloved outsider of the NXT universe, Zayn was lost leading up to Dallas. He had lost the title to Kevin Owens and was nearing the end of his time in the NXT universe, so Commissioner William Regal rewarded him with a landmark match against rookie star Nakamura. Immediately captivating the crowd with his unbeatable theme song and enigmatic rock star charisma, he was in overdrive ahead of this match.

The chemistry between the two was electric, the battle between the brutality of Nakamura's strong style and Zayn's unwavering heart intoxicating for all viewers. In a match built on respect, intensity and aggression, both men sought to impress and they did so with aplomb. Unfortunately, it looks like neither man will ever reach the heights of this moment, but they did capture lightning in a bottle in a match-of-the-year contender.

NXT Acquisition: Brooklyn II (20 August 2016)
NXT Tag Team Championship Match:
The Revival (Dash & Dawson) vs. #DIY (Tommaso Ciampa & Johnny Gargano)

Currently making waves as the newest tag team in All Elite Wrestling, The Revival originally rose through NXT to become the first two-time NXT Tag Team Champion in history. They had a string of strong matches with American Alpha before, but this is where they began to cement their reputation as one of the best duos in the world. Gargano and Ciampa had just finished an impressive cruiserweight classic match when Commissioner Regal called the match.

A mix of The Revival's old-school, cut-the-loop-through tactics and #DIY's faster, indie-inspired style created an action-packed, psychology-based story. Featuring some massive fake entries and a rapturous audience, this match continued the good work started earlier this year with the NXT Tag Team Division.

NXT Acquisition: Toronto (November 19, 2016)
2 of 3 Falls Match Pelo NXT Tag Team Championship:
The Revival (Dash & Dawson) vs. #DIY (Tommaso Ciampa & Johnny Gargano)

After an absolute barnstormer at the previous event, #DIY got a second chance after The Revival eliminated them from the semi-finals of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic. Because #DIY had won a non-title match months earlier and had held off The Revival more recently, the match was billed as a 2 out of 3 falls. The event's build focused on Gargano's struggle with self-doubt and blaming himself for the loss. The match itself was a match of the year contender, with its unrelenting pace and storytelling captivating audiences.

An early pinfall put The Revival ahead and focused their attack on the sympathetic Gargano. Inspired by each other, #DIY leveled the match with a super kick/knee strike combo, and with all that was at stake, Gargano fought to defeat his demons. In one infamous image, Gargano and Ciampa locked their submissions against both opponents at the same time, with both members of The Revival tapping at the same time. A heroic victory that reverberated for years to come.

NXT TakeOver: Chicago (20. Mai 2017)
Ladder Match Pelo NXT Tag Team Championship:
The Authors of Pain (Akam & Rezar) c/Paul Ellering vs. Paul Ellering #DIY (Tommaso Ciampa & Johnny Gargano)

The next step in the evolution of NXT's tag team division, which continues to grow as regular show stealers, with the beloved #DIY trying to bounce back from the beasts. This was a well-deserved choice for NXT's first Tag Team Main Event, a reward for the tremendous work done by The Revival, American Alpha, and #DIY the year before. In a brutally violent war where brave challengers came so close to victory only for the champions to claim victory, all four men put on an incredible performance.

However, it would be remiss not to mention the aftermath, as just as the show was winding down and the crowd showing their appreciation for the vanquished heroes, the unthinkable happened. Despite being defended by Gargano early in the game, Ciampa turned viciously on his partner and attacked him, knocking Gargano through the table. While doctors tended to his victim, Ciampa sat in peace. One of the greatest wrestling matches in history was upon us.

NXT TakeOver: Chicago (20. Mai 2017)
UK Championship Game:
Tyler Bate x Pete Dunne

Having already shocked the world with an incredible match in the final of the British Championship Tournament, both men were under pressure to repeat the magic on a bigger stage. With the champion just 20 years old and Bruiserweight just three years older, the two prodigies built on their previous match and created a hugely successful match.

Deftly pacing in front of an immensely hot crowd, these two men stole the show and became the catalyst for the future British brand. In the end, Dunne's experience allowed him to lure Bate and punish the champion, allowing him to hold the championship for nearly two full years.

NXT Acquisition: Brooklyn III (19 August 2017)
NXT Women's Championship Game:
Asuka vs. Ember Moon

With a title reign of 510 days, Asuka has set a benchmark for the NXT women's division that has yet to truly be matched. For sixteen months, Asuka dominated the division, defending the title against a number of challengers including Bayley, Nia Jax, The IIconics and Nikki Cross. However, her biggest challenger and toughest opponent was the newly debuted Ember Moon, who earlier this year had to cheat on Asuka to defeat her.

This rematch looked like Moon would win and become champion and got close to her as she landed the heavily guarded stunner finisher she dubbed Eclipse. However, to the surprise of many, Asuka retained the title after relentlessly focusing on Moon's injured arm and forcing Moon to step out. In fact, Moon emerged from this defeat with greater public respect after proving that she was Asuka's equal.

Unfortunately, an injury in that match forced Asuka to relinquish her championship a few days later, but she went on a high with this match.

NXT TakeOver: WarGames (18. November 2017)
Simple game:
Aleister Black gegen The Velveteen Dream

The 29 best NXT TakeOver matches of all time (1)

Sometimes it's not titles or revenge that combatants fight for. And respect. In a match built around Black's incessant need for Dream to say his name, it would be a star performance for both performers. Up to this point, both men had piqued fan interest, but this rivalry helped elevate them and their use of psychology throughout the game captivated the crowd.

Whether it was the two stealing each other's character traits or a quick exchange of moves, this was a show-stealing match that set both men up for future success. It's a must for character work and the importance of quirks in a match.

NXT TakeOver: Philadelphia (27. Januar 2018)
Extreme Rule Match:
Aleister Black vs Adam Cole

The 29 best NXT TakeOver matches of all time (2)

Almost unfairly overshadowed by the instant classic that would follow, Black and Cole put together a highly entertaining brawl that spanned their differing styles beautifully. Weapon use during this match was minimal, with Black using his knees and kicks "living gun" style (sorry, Steve Blackman).

In contrast, the incredulous and sarcastic Cole resorted to kendo sticks and chairs to level the playing field. With some notable attacks (notably Cole returning to an upright chair first) and an impressed audience, it deserves far more praise than it's received before.

NXT TakeOver: Philadelphia (27. Januar 2018)
NXT Championship Game:
Andrade 'Cem' Almas with Zelina Vega vs. Johnny Gargano

Having already shown impressive chemistry in two previous games (with Almas winning both), the excitement for this game was high. Gargano had already become an NXT fan favorite after being betrayed by Ciampa while Alma's partnership with Zelina revitalized his career.

This was a perfect half hour as the underdog hero battled the vicious rogue act of the champion and his manager. The excitement of this match cannot be underestimated and will set the standard for NXT for the next two years. If anyone doubts Almas as the main combatant, watch this classic again.

NXT Acquisition: New Orleans (April 7, 2018)
Ladder Match Pelo NXT North American Championship:
EC3 vs Adam Cole vs Ricochet vs Killian Dain vs Lars Sullivan vs Velveteen Dream

Kicking off WrestleMania weekend with a declaration of love in ranked matches, NXT's bid for a small championship belt got off to the best possible start. Taking six fighters with a lot of potential and bringing them together in a fight like this might hurt some fighters, but all six came out fantastic.

(Video) FULL MATCH: Johnny Gargano vs. Andrade - NXT Championship Match: NXT TakeOver: Philadelphia

Lars and Killian performed as absolute monsters (which was fine while it lasted), Ricochet was a huge highlight throughout, EC3 impressed with his character and sales, Dream continued his growth as a talented rookie and Cole used his wits to win strong crosswise. For those who miss the car crash style of TLC II or early MITB matches, this PPV opener is a wonderful throwback.

NXT Acquisition: New Orleans (April 7, 2018)
unsanctioned game
Johnny Gargano x Tommaso Ciampa

Sometimes all it takes is a kindhearted hero fighting an evil bastard to avenge the villain's betrayal. After costing Gargano not only his title match but his career as well, Ciampa entered this fight as the most hated man in wrestling. Ciampa even left out the opening music to take advantage of the boos and hatred.

By comparison, Gargano's desire to regain his NXT career was a snag that any viewer could get over, making Johnny Gargano an audience-loved icon. With rewarding throwbacks to moments from the past and a tremendous pace, this match was instantly special and a wonderful reward for the fans invested in this story.

NXT TakeOver: Chicago II (16. Juni 2018)
Street Fights in Chicago:
Johnny Gargano x Tommaso Ciampa

For the second year in a row, Ciampa and Gargano led in a brutal main event. Any fears that they might struggle to live up to their previous classic were quickly allayed as the two used the emotions of their story to build. Since the first Chicago TakeOver was the scene of Ciampa's betrayal, this match went down in history.

This time, however, this story and Gargano's emotions overwhelmed him, and his inability to let go left him open to Ciampa to take advantage of. The scathing hate opened up a world of possibilities as Gargano's rage consumed him and Ciampa suddenly found himself in more control than ever.

NXT Acquisition: Brooklyn 4 (August 18, 2018)
NXT Tag Team Championship Match:
The Undisputed Era (Kyle O'Reilly & Roderick Strong) vs. Moustache Mountain (Trent Seven & Tyler Bate)

The 29 best NXT TakeOver matches of all time (3)

Since The Undisputed Era has become the standard bearer of the NXT Tag Team Division, which has featured O'Reilly, Strong or Bobby Fish as champions since November 2017, the division has become a must-have in every TakeOver. Leading up to Brooklyn 4, O'Reilly and Strong met at Seven and Bate, crowd favorite Mustache Mountain.

The two British Strong Style graduates won the titles in a crowd-pleaser only to lose them in an incredible match when Seven's knee forced Bate to throw in the towel. This third encounter demonstrated tremendous chemistry between the four, building on Seven's dubious knee history while also portraying Bate as one of the best babyfaces in distress. Performances like this are a great reminder of why Mustache Mountain was chosen to represent the NXT UK brand.

NXT Acquisition: Brooklyn 4 (August 18, 2018)
NXT North American Championship-Match:
Adam Cole vs. Ricochete

The 29 best NXT TakeOver matches of all time (4)

A one-on-one match between two of the NXT brand's best competitors, whose opposite styles blend perfectly. This ambitious and dramatic match featured tremendous highlights like Cole superkicking ricochet in the middle of a moonsault or a huge hurricarana on the floor.

This competition would help improve not only the newly formed championship but also the two contenders.

NXT Acquisition: Brooklyn 4 (August 18, 2018)
Last Man Standing Match Pelo NXT Championship:
Tommaso Ciampa x Johnny Gargano

The 29 best NXT TakeOver matches of all time (5)

The original main event was supposed to feature Ciampa's defense against former champion Aleister Black and his rival Gargano in a triple threat match, but an unfortunate injury to Black put paid to that. Instead, NXT set the stage for the rubber match between the former friends.

The development of the story of the two previous wars influenced this battle, with Ciampa continuing to use his manipulative mind to draw Gargano's wrath. This culminated in Gargano's inability to forgive Ciampa, which cost him the match, in a moment that beautifully embodied NXT's narrative power.

NXT TakeOver: WarGames II (17. August 2018)
The Undisputed Era (Adam Cole, Kyle O’Reilly, Roderick Strong, Bobby Fish) vs.
Ricochet, Pete Dunne & The War Raiders (Hanson & Rowe)

The 29 best NXT TakeOver matches of all time (6)

As the mastermind behind NXT's growth from development to third-party brand, Triple-H has always been inspired by the NWA's heyday in the 1980s. The past year allowed him to resurrect a version of WarGames that pitted three teams of three against each other instead of four four normally. This year, however, has allowed NXT to incorporate the classic element of two teams, eight men, three rings and Match Beyond.

This WarGames is designed for all eight men to impress, Undisputed Era uses their teamwork to take control of the game. With Strong's power, O'Reilly's hitting and finishing prowess, Cole's cowardly nature, and Fish's ingenuity, the odds seemed to be in their favor. However, with Ricochet's innovative agility, the deceptive size and speed of the War Raiders, and Dunne's unabashed brutality, the underdogs fought their way to victory. With some impressive moments (I personally like the two teams between the rings) it combines an ode to history with the emotions of the present.

NXT Acquisition: New York (April 5, 2019)
NXT Tag Team Championship Match:
The War Raiders (Hanson & Rowe) vs. Ricochet & Aleister Black

(Video) Top 25 TakeOver Moments: NXT Top 5 Special Edition, May 26, 2019

In the opening game of arguably the best PPV in TakeOver history, the War Raiders defended their titles against the newly united Black and Ricochet. Despite their apparent discrepancy, the challengers showed incredible chemistry to earn a deserved chance. All four displayed tag team agility, speed, strength and resourcefulness that started out slow and then demonstrated non-stop pace in an action-packed match.

After the win, the War Raiders respectfully hugged their opponents and then departed, giving Black and Ricochet an emotional farewell to a loving crowd. A standing ovation, a bow from both challengers, and a "You deserve it" chant as Black and Ricochet bid farewell to the NXT universe.

NXT Acquisition: New York (April 5, 2019)
NXT United Kingdom Championship Match:
Pete Dunne x WALTER

After 685 days as champion, Dunne successfully grew the NXT UK brand and became a crowd pleaser. At the recent British takeover in Blackpool, Dunne successfully defended his title against Joe Coffey only to have to face off against debutant WALTER. A colossal mountain from a man who invested simple moves with unparalleled brutality, WALTER represented Dunne's greatest challenge as a champion.

The game's storyline saw Dunne try to fight the bigger man, only for WALTER to assert his dominance multiple times. Dunne attempted to resort to the joint manipulation that had helped him so many times with the withhold, but let out at the end of a vicious powerbomb on the top rope. WALTER followed with a top rope splash to win the British Championship, which he currently holds at over 480 days.

NXT Acquisition: New York (April 5, 2019)
Two Out of Three Falls Match Pelo Vacant NXT Championship:
Adam Cole vs. Johnny Gargano

The first NXT match to break the five-star rating with a 5.5 rating was originally meant to spell the end of the Ciampa vs. Gargano feud, but an unfortunate neck injury to Ciampa meant the championship had to be vacated. Against all odds, Cole and Gargano grabbed a masterpiece and created it. The first fall featured two equals trying to avoid a big break, resulting in an error from Gargano who lost the first fall. This fits beautifully with Cole's story before leaving, which suggests Gargano can hardly win a fall, let alone two.

The second fall was character-driven, with a cocky Cole still poised to win, while Gargano's desperation and refusal to win by count almost backfired. Even at the finish, Cole quickly tapped Gargano to avoid injury and stay strong for the third fall. The third case is wonderful storytelling as the audience and commentators will pit themselves against Gargano against Cole and the Undisputed Era, culminating in one of the most emotional victories in NXT history. For a short time, Gargano was at the top of the world.

NXT Acquisition: XXV (June 1, 2019)
Single match for the NXT Championship:
Johnny Gargano vs Adam Cole

Two months after the instant classic, Gargano defended the championship against the leader of the undisputed era. After both learning from the fight, they had a massive rematch, with Cole using his intelligence to focus on Gargano's right knee. That willingness from Cole to attack Gargano's injury would make all the difference.

Although The Undisputed Era was involved in its loss to Gargano in the previous takeover, The Undisputed Era surprised many by not interfering. However, Cole used this expectation of interference to distract Gargano before taking advantage of and eventually defeating the inspirational underdog known as "Johnny Wrestling".

NXT TakeOver: Toronto II (10. August 2019)
Grudge Correspondence:
Io Shirai vs. Candice LeRae

The 29 best NXT TakeOver matches of all time (7)

Potential show stealers are often mentioned in previews for takeover events, increasing anticipation. But every once in a while a match comes along that takes the crowd by surprise, with two competitors determined to prove they deserve attention. This match showcased a cruelty between two intense women, LeRae eventually transitioning from a stunning role as "Gargano's wife" to an impressive babyface of her own. Her determination and desire helped her connect with an unsuspecting audience and showed that she was talented herself.

Shirai surprised many with her heel, but here she demonstrated an unrelenting, mean edge that breathed new life into her. Both women combined in a heated match at tremendous pace, mesmerizing the crowd with multiple takedowns and vicious attacks. A perfect display of not only the depth of the women's roster, but the consistently brilliant TakeOver events.

NXT TakeOver: WarGames III (23. November 2019)
war games:
The Baszler Team (Shayn Baszler, Bianca Belair, Io Shirai, Kay Lee Ray)
Equipe Ripley (Rhea Ripley, Candice LeRae, Tegan Nox, Dakota Kai)

NXT has continued its tremendous work in the women's division over the past five years, introducing the first women's edition of WarGames. After Baszler and his minions Marina Shafir and Jessamyn Duke spent months building a growing animosity that made enemies in Nox, Kai, former British NXT Women's Champion Ripley and Mia Yim, their wars have taken over NXT. With Belair and Lee Ray's involvement, as well as Shirai and LeRae's rivalry combined with Baszler, it was obvious that only WarGames could contain them.

The match itself highlighted Ripley as a great star, while Dakota Kai's betrayal of her best friend was a revealing moment. Nox's popularity with the crowd won renewed empathy, and the performances of LeRae and Shiai held the match together. Kay Lee Ray's brutal thrashing of her opponents even helped demonstrate the potential of the NXT UK squad to an audience that might not have known any better. One of the highlights of the NXT women's division.

NXT TakeOver: Portland (February 16, 2020)
NXT Tag Team Championship Match:
The Undisputed Era (Bobby Fish & Kyle O'Reilly) vs. The BroserWeights (Pete Dunne & Matt Riddle)

The 29 best NXT TakeOver matches of all time (8)

One of the most valuable elements of NXT is Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic. Celebrating the beloved "American Dream" for his valuable work as producer and senior coach of NXT, the tournament featured several popular tag teams: the respective victories of The Authors of Pain and Aleister Black & Ricochet catapulted them to successful tag team runs , while The Undisputed Era were bolstered with the addition of Roderick Strong.

(Video) FULL MATCH - Aleister Black vs. Adam Cole - Extreme Rules Match: NXT TakeOver: Philadelphia

This year's iteration continued the habit of newly formed teams being successful, with Matt Riddle and Pete Dunne being partners. Their apparent mismatch, Dunne's dour and dry compared to Riddle's laid-back stupidity, belied their surprising chemistry in winning the tournament. Her prize was a tag team championship match against tag team kings at Fish and O'Reilly. The tournament allowed NXT to bring some freshness to the tag team division while also highlighting Riddle and Dunne as a likable team.

Almost six years of main event classics, tag team champions, gripping stories, inspiring heroes and a groundbreaking women's division. With such a diverse collection of historical matches, there is something for every fan. The NXT brand is currently a hit, with a dedicated fanbase ready to kick off this weekend. The only question will be, will any of the NXT TakeOver: XXX matches make the list above as a TakeOver Classic?
